Japanese Red Cross Institute for Humanitarian Studies

The Japanese Red Cross Institute for Humanitarian Studies was established on April 1, 2011 by the Japanese Red Cross Academy in collaboration with the Japanese Red Cross Society; aiming to become an Academic Center for Humanitarian Studies for research fellows while networking six Japanese Red Cross Colleges of Nursing and one Junior College. The center is located at the Japanese Red Cross College of Nursing.

Red Cross Archives Corner

  1. Research and study on historical records and documents of the International Red Cross /Red Crescent Movement. (including the Japanese Red Cross Society, hereinafter International Red Cross Movement.)
  2. Research and study on activities and programs of the International Red Cross Movement.
  3. Projects for studies and dissemination of International Humanitarian Law.
  4. Collaborative academic studies with organizations affiliated with the International Red Cross Movement.
  5. Support for researches and studies conducted by the Red Cross Colleges of Nursing and one Junior Red Cross College.

Report on activities (2022)

This report provides you with an overview of the main activities of the JIHS. 

  1. Publication of “The Journal of Humanitarian Studies” Vol.12
  2. Development and production of dissemination/educational materials to increase awareness of the humanitarian issues and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
    • Publication of the “Dialogue on Nuclear Weapons:An appeal for Humanity from the Red Cross”, which compiles the existing materials on the anti-Nuclear weapon efforts by the JRCS.
    • Publication of the “ Travel Guide "R+travel". The guidebook features around 70 red cross -related historical places nationwide in Japan. (2nd printing)
  3. Research activities on the following topics by the research fellows :
    • Collection/making of the inventory on the archives of the JRCS, which support the researcher, and the exhibition of the historic materials about nursing activities of the JRCS.
    • Research on the activities by the JRCS under the Contingency Law in Japan
    • Research on the JRCS’s nursing education in the national reformation after the WWII
